Palm Beads is a tiny Art Deco shop, crammed with Jewellery and Gifts.

It was established in 1984 and has been sucessfully operating a small retail outlet in Greville Street,
right in the heart of Prahran opposite the Town Hall, ever since.

Over the years, we’ve become known as
THE JEWELLERY SHOP IN GREVILLE STREET.”

We’re famous for our enormous range, (“Too much choice!” they cry.)
of Costume Jewellery, Sterling Silver and Semi Precious Stones, these both Locally Sourced and Australian Made.

Then, of course, there’s the network of Friends we’ve built up, who bring in pieces for us from all over the World…..

But our passion is for Tribal Silver Jewellery from all over Asia, Central Asia and Africa.

We have a knowledgable team, who are happy to talk about our exotic collectables, textiles and tribal jewellery.

Here on our website we’re offering a range of selected Tribal Jewellery, Textiles, Antiquities and Collectables.

“Enjoy your browse, if you have any questions feel free to ask…..”

Our Staff

Abdul. (actually Anaki, but we all know him as ‘Abdul’, his choice and so much easier.)

Was born in the 60’s in Kabul, Afghanistan.

With a background in Antiques and Tribal jewellery, he worked in this field in London from 1983.
Arriving in Melbourne, Australia in 1992.
Closing his shop ‘Lapis Lazuli’ in High St. Armadale, he joined us at the start of 2000.

Prior to this he had been supplying us with Tribal Jewellery and Artefacts, mostly from Afghanistan and further into Central Asia.
(Places that, as it turns out, we are just not able to go to, and these mixed deliciously with the fruits of our regular trips to India, Nepal and South East Asia.)

He brought a wonderful dowry with him, when he joined us and now it’s our turn to share it with you.

Cam. Born in the 50’s in Heidelberg, Melbourne, Australia.

Background in Graphic Design and Fine Art, in Drawing and Printmaking.
Best known for his Childrens’ Books and Gardening Illustrations.
Started working for Peter Baumgarten’s studio in 1984, joined Palm Beads in 1986.
Continues designing and making Jewellery from Exotic Beads, Silver, semi precious Stones and of course helping customers.
It’s his fingers that do the measuring and describing, tapping away, in the hope you’ll share our enthusiasm for our collection.

“My ancestors were from Cornwall and Devon, (just on the border) came out for the ‘Gold Rush’ in the 1850’s.
A pirate link on my mother’s side to John Drake (brother of Sir Francis, who travelled with him.)
I wanted to be an archaeologist. I used as a child, to buy broken jewellery at Church Fetes,
for the pirate to horde and bury, so the archaeologist could discover and dig it up later.
(that National Geographic documentary on vacuuming the sacred sacrificial well at Chichen Itza, had a lot to answer for, very muddy!)
And the primitive moated, peat thatched village, an extinguished oil lamp, the evening breeze fanning a smouldering roof, those dancing reflections in the moat.
Tssk, I so, so looked forward to trowelling that site, after school, the next day!”

Has travelled in Indonesia, Thailand, India, Nepal, Egypt, Bahrain and Italy.

Carlette. (Carli as we know her) is now a grown up mum.
21 years ago when she started with us, she was a “gorgeous young thing”.
That’s how it is, though, the street is now littered with another generation of “gorgeous young things!”

Her background is in Retail Fashion/Jewellery, with a long history of laughter and customer service.
Exquisite fashion sense and a natural exuberance combines with her exotic looks and Mauritian heritage (Islands, palm trees, Creole patois, India, trade, a year round tan, ravishingly curly hair, spicy seafoods and her mothers “pickled octopus” is simply legendary!)

She seems to have an uncanny knack of popping something old or tribal onto a thread and carrying it superbly.
Her customers thrive on this skillful advice and her wicked sense of humour.

Carli has travelled in Indonesia, India and Mauritius.
