Pashtun, Beaded Epaulette

Worn on the shoulder by Pashtun girls in Pakistan and Afghanistan, this fringed triangle of pink cloth is covered in a net of small glass beads.

Ancient protective "rams horn" patterns normally seen on rugs and embroideries are carefully threaded in different colours of translucent glass beads.

Usually worn as a pair, one on each shoulder, in this case there is only one which of course halves your cost.

There is a rich magenta fringe along two sides which inturn is edged with an opaque beaded border and netted fringe.

The opaque blues and whites are usually incorporated to ward off the "Evil Eye" but the other colours, combined with the patterns and motifs, would also contribute to this.

The fringe doesn't sit perfectly flat as it is designed to hang down over the shoulder. (I wonder if, just if, this is derived from a military uniform at some stage? Hopefully not from '80's shoulder pads, as seen in Bollywood movies !)

If you're interested we may still have some others, in pairs, available.
