4 "Old" Gilt Beads

These 4 brass or gilt silver beads from northern Afghanistan, are a richly old colour working well with either gold or silver ingredients when you string them. They have a heavily indented design punched and chiselled into the thin metal surface, which has been skillfully antiqued with a dark rub that enhances the detail.

They are filled with an earthy resin for support and strength, and were probably made by hand by refugee silversmiths now resident in Northern Aghanistan, and as such they are both affordable and their production offers continuity for their traditions, which might otherwise disappear.

On the other hand they may be older than that and from further afield, too, they certainly look it.

I'd avoid polishing them even with a "silver polishing cloth" so don't get to carried away or you'll polish the patina too much and lose that lovely old feel.

Each bead is "roundish" measuring L 17 mm x W 17 mm, with an inner hole of about 4 mm, I comfortably thread them using a 5 mm bead or larger at each end as a pivot.

We may also have other sizes available for mixing when you thread up your own design.

Age: This Century, or earlier, they've don't appear to have been used..

Size: L 17 mm x W 17 mm, each bead

Weight: 15 grams.
