Antique Turquoise & Coral Necklace.

Sorry, this lovely old necklace is no longer available.
This rich and moody necklace combines recycled genuine old Red Coral, retrieved from Pakistan and Northern India, with handmade sterling silver and Antique Tibetan Turquoise beads collected in Ladakh, Northern India. These interspersed with old Indian silver beads collected in the 70's and two Turkoman beads from Afghanistan.

This delightfully mid and deep coloured old Red Coral is becoming rare and is now hard to get, we've been very lucky sourcing what we have. And these pieces have been selected trying to match size, shape, colour and grain, without becoming too slavish over it, as then the necklace can lose its life and become boring. (Remember they are old and have each had their own history, they are not mass produced identical modern beads.) The larger corals all have an interesting pitted texture, that I chose specifically to enhance both the age and "tribalness" of the overall necklace.

The centrepiece is a gently worn Antique Tibetan Turquoise nugget that has been long worn, probably on a necklace but possibly on a "perak" headdress in Ladakh, where I think it is from. The two extremely dark Turquoises are modern, however their colour which usually indicates age, was quite sympathetic to the overall design, and to find ones that match is extraordinary.

I've used durable multi stranded Tiger Tail for the central threaded section, which is the strongest I can get, however DON'T stretch or scrunch it as you can irrepairably kink it if you do.

I've deliberately oxidized/darkened the sterling silver chain to age it, but later it will respond well to a gentle polishing lengthwise with a dry "Silver Polishing Cloth" but don't stretch it by rubbing too hard.

I'd be selective polishing the beads, some of which are quite old as they already were when we found them almost 30 years ago, as you don't want to remove all the age. (for this reason avoid liquid cleaners!)

Incidentally, the background is an embroidered suzani from Samarkand.
