Berber Large Enamelled Cuff

A large Berber cuff  from the Beni Yenni Tribe of Greater Kabylia, Northern Algeria. A silver wrist cuff decorated with applied riased domes and twirling spirals of silver wire filled with ultramarine, mustard and lime green enamelling, set with six long old Red Coral twigs.

It widens at each end flaring out from the narrower centre which is embellished with a raised, enamelled boss.

This cuff measures 56 mm (at its widest point ie the two ends.), the centre is 31 mm. The all important "gap" is 34 mm, so check your wrist, there is no adjusting this one !!

Avoid squeezing or altering the shape, it's very tempting but could at worst cause the enamel to chip or flake. (Remember that being real enamel, it is glass melted onto the metal and as such can react as glass would to mistreatment.)

It has a dull "relaxed" patina, but I probably wouldn't polish this piece as silver only improves with age, however, when, or if. you decide to do it a careful polish with a dry "Silver Polishing Cloth" will bring up the details without removing the darker background oxides. Avoid liquid cleaners.

The interior has a roughly polished look as though they've had a go at getting the dense oxide off it, the residue in the dips is the clue to an actual age that is not obvious from the exterior.

From the "Greater Kabylia" region of Northern Algeria.

Age: Mid/Late 20th century.

Size: Length 77 mm x W 54 mm.
