Ersari Turkoman, Silver Carnelian Earhooks.

Sorry, this item is no longer available.

A shorter pair of very wearable partially “gilt” silver drop earhooks, made by Turkoman Silversmiths now living in Northern Afghanistan. (The term “earhook” denotes a single piece earring with no seperate hook, it’s less jiggly to wear but makes a fixed statement allowing more of a swinging or slower movement. Also there are less moving parts to get caught in long hair.)

Set with a “cabachon” teardrop Carnelian surrounded with inscribed scrolling foliage.

The lack of gilding leads me to call these “Ersari Turkoman”, but they are very probably be “in the style of …”, whatever the case, they look good.

The ear hook is a normal wearable thickness, and they aren’t heavy.

These are a high grade silver, possibly even Sterling, although they aren’t stamped.

As such, and with these thinner earwires one can assume they were made for the West, normally this might be considered negative.

But, all the better for us to be able to wear them comfortably.

And on another level, by buying these we are not only supporting living Silver Smiths, but also encouraging them to work in traditional styles and techniques.
Therefore creating a continuance for their culture, which is being smothered by the seductions of the Modern World.

Now settled in towns and villages, traditional nomads are more and more being seduced by the now, for modern, and abandoning their distinguishing traditions as old fashioned.
All to often they’re happily aspiring to glitzy mass produced, even machine made, gold pieces from India.

Perfect for either general wear, or classy belly dancing (although they don’t have dangles.)

These are very similar to TE121 and TE122, which both have fire gilt highlights.

(Oh, and the backgrounds are William Morris Wallpaper designs not Russian Export Cottons, however, the latter would have been influenced by whatever was popular in Europe at the time.
And I’m sure William Morris, Liberty and the Arts and Crafts movement, as a whole, would have liked these traditionally handcrafted earrings!)
