Indian, Ikat Print Sari.

This Silk Sari from India, has a “false ikat” printed design in subtle Art Deco colours.

A soft cerise/burgundy, sienna, black and a light olive green combined with the restraint of plain ivory silk, go very well together.
At almost 5 metres long, as is usual the most concentrated detail is in the first metre, the main body being much lighter with a scattered Japanese water motif, its placement balancing the design.

At just under 5 metres no photo is going to do it justice and when you unwrap it you’ll find it’s better than these images.
(I’m so close to keeping it, but am not allowed to.)

Working so much here with both “genuine ikat” and various forms of printed “false ikat” I couldn’t resist including this sari.
The recurring undercurrent of Art Deco that flows through the Indian items is also very enticing.

It’s in surprisingly good condition, although there may be some very minor stains and two tiny (4mm) holes at opposite ends, remember it is vintage.
(in the photos it is hanging after washing and although dry is almost translucent allowing colours to come “through” it from behind. That explains the “glow” you may see.)

Age: Hard to tell, but probably 1960’s to 80’s, it’s definitely vintage.

Size: L 480 cm x W 110 cm.

Weight: 244 grams.
