Large Peking Glass Bead

Sorry, this old bead is no longer available.
An old rather large, slightly translucent white Peking Glass Bead, which whilst molten has been rolled in crumbs of red, blue and green glass which have fused into the surface.

In so doing they have softened their outlines and appear to float or be painted onto the surface. These areas of colour on this particular bead are clearly defined with some hard edges, whereas our other examples are more blurred. One red hasn't fully merged and is slightly embossed and one almost clear has the hint of a pattern visible (we may also have an example of this colour/pattern combination as a whole bead, see PG109)

This bead appears older than our others, the white body having a density that appears slightly grey by comparison and has been repaired at one end with a dark bubbly resin of some sort. But the other end is unmarked and therefore quite suitable for a display. Other than this repair the rest of the bead though pitted as seen in the close ups is in good condition and could be worn if you wish.

I would assume it's 19th Century or at the very least late Ching Dynasty (ie pre 1911)

The hole is 5 x 6 mm, being smaller at the repaired end (4 x 3 mm)

Age: 19th Century

Size: D 32 mm x H 32 mm

Weight: 44 grams
