Tajik, Silver Prayer Box Pendant

Sorry, this Prayer Box is no longer available.
An old heavy silver, rectangular prayer box, from Tajikistan.
Hinged at the top and clasped at centre bottom, where pointed rings attach dangling hollow spiral “Tajik” beads with “mulberry” terminals. Alternating with “mulberry” points accross bottom. a dangle at either side adds to the protective jingling.
A plain bevelled silver border surrounds an engraved “tiger stripe” border enclosing a central flower or sun with foliage against zig zag chasing.
Worn for protection, for housing “prayers” or sacred Koranic texts.
A row of “mulberries” runs accross the top, these are integral to Tajik work, the mulberry leaf feeding the Silkworms.
Could be worn on a chain or preferably a soft cord, as the triangular rings at each top corner are partially blocked by a mulberry cluster.
The space available is about 5mm (0.5 ins.) If you want to attach a chain, I can include 2 sympathetic Indian “S” hooks, but specify these.
Overall glowing mild patina with some tiny knocks, otherwise in good condition, it has a nice tone to it.
Careful polishing would further enhance the engraving.
Can also be worn reversed, which is plain mid silver with the same design, without the catch etc.
This piece may have been made for Tajiks, probably by Uzbek smiths.

Age: Mid/Late 20th Century.

Size: W 95 mm x H 94 mm
