Yomud Turkoman, Large Hoops

Sorry, this wonderful pair of hoops is no longer available.

A pair of very large Yomud Turkoman ”gulak khaka”, silver ear hoops.
Decorated with a slice of embossed ”fire gilt” silver, embellished with rich translucent Red and Blue Glass domes. (mysteriously unscratched, considering the wear on the silver, I assume they are replacements, irrelevant though, as they look superb.)
The hollow silver knobs around the bottom, have all had their extensions knocked off, and are very beaten. Once again, what is remaining is so stunning, that this damage just confirms their age and appeal. The central raised “gilt” flower and vine pattern is wonderful, and in good condition too, a beautiful contrast with the beaten, blackened and shiny silver of the knobs and the actual hoops.
A very, very dreamy and dramatic, but wearable, large hoop (wire is 2 mm thick) for a very experienced lobe, not for beginners, as the wire flattens at the tip, becoming wider again (3 mm.) I think normal wear, they’d stay in, but they were designed to lock and stay in permanently, at this stage a cotton or a little silver earwire would lock it.
If you want to wear them (a collector mightn’t) I could possibly do a catch for you, but make sure to specify.
Very Venetian/Byzantine, like a gold mosaic or a rich golden brocade, lovely. ( I’m reminded of St.Marks in Venice.)

Age: 19 th/Early 20 th Century.

Diameter 95 mm (3.5 ins. not including knobs.)

Size: W 95 mm x H 95 mm

Weight: 52 grams
