Uzbek, Turquoise & Carnelian Earrings.

Sorry, these Uzbek earrings are no longer available. However we may have a similar pair, just ask us.

Here are a pair of two piece silver Uzbek earrings from Northern Afghanistan, featuring a range of small green and aqua Turquoise domes surrounding a central Carnelian domed teardrop. The silver surface is covered in applied stamped "false granulation" (usually seen on Kazak pieces) combined with filigree spirals.

The shape is characteristic Uzbek with those Central Asian curves combining well with the coloured stones. We may also still have some cuffs and pendants in this colour blend, should you want a set.

The ear hook is decorated with Turquoises, and incidently, is a normal wearable thickness but the earrings themselves aren't heavy.

These are a high grade silver, possibly even Sterling and would respond well to a gentle polish with a dry "Silver Polishing Cloth" bringing up the raised details.

As such, and with the thinner earwires one can assume they were made for the West, normally this might be considered negative.

All the better for us to be able to wear them comfortably.

And on another level, by buying these we are not only supporting living Silver Smiths but also encouraging them to work in traditional styles and techniques.
Therefore creating a continuance for their culture, which is being smothered by the seductions of the Modern World.
Now settled in towns and villages traditional nomads are more and more being seduced by the now, for modern, and abandoning their distinguishing traditions thinking of them as old fashioned.
All to often they’re happily aspiring to glitzy mass produced, even machine made, gold pieces from India.
When this happens the Silver Smiths have to adapt making “newer” designs or forgetting old techniques and styles in doing so.
So those of us who think, “Is it old?” “Is it Genuine?” are perhaps going to need to be a little more flexible, as ’Genuine Older pieces" become harder to find and consequently more expensive.
